Pepperell reading stars win Bruins signed Milan Lucic puck.

Elizabeth Loprinze and Elena Copson are among a select group of young people to receive Bruins prizes for their outstanding participation in the Lawrence Library of Pepperell’s summer reading program.

When program sponsors, the Boston Bruins, the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC), and the Massachusetts Library System, asked public librarians to make nominations, Jo Ann Pierce, Youth Services Librarian, sent in names of some Pepperell readers. “We have many, many wonderful young people in our program. I'm glad two of them were recognized in this way.”, said Miss Jo Ann. “Elizabeth and Elena couldn’t be happier.”

The Bruins began partnering with the MBLC and the Massachusetts Library System three years ago. The organizations work with libraries across the Commonwealth to make reading a part of summer fun for all ages. To encourage children and teens to read a variety of books over the summer, Tim Thomas, Milan Lucic, Tyler Seguin and other players helped libraries develop Favorite Books of the Boston Bruins, a recommended reads list that includes librarians’ picks for the best hockey books. “The kids really enjoy picking up a book and seeing that it was recommended by one of the Bruins players. It inspires them to want to read it themselves,” said Miss Jo Ann. It’s available online here.

In 2011, the statewide Summer Reading Programs ran for 6 to 8 weeks. During that time libraries offered over 10,000 summer reading events, programs, and workshops attended by over 370,000 people. Close to 100,000 children, teens, and adults registered for summer reading. Massachusetts has offered statewide online summer reading programs since 2007. Participants register, write bookreviews, set goals, and track their progress online. Massachusetts was the first state in the country to offer such a program. Registration for the programs begins in June and can be done here.
