Please Read - Important Information Regarding the Pepperell Library, Senior Center & Community Center

Pepperell's Town Meeting voted to authorize the Selectmen to call for an override election to fund Pepperell's Lawrence Library, Senior Center, and Community Center. That override election will take place June 29, 2009.

  • It is critical you particpate in this override election to prevent the Pepperell Library, Senior Center and Community Center from closing.
  • All three department budgets will be subject to this ballot override vote.
  • On June 29 the ballot override for all three budgets must pass.

Should the override election fail on June 29, the Library, Senior Center, and Community Center will have one month (until July 31, 2009) to close their doors.

What does this mean for our Library Patrons?

  • If the Library closes there will be a loss of state accreditation and $16,000 in State Aid.
  • Your Pepperell library card will not be honored in any other library in the state, nor can you go to another town library to apply for their library card.
  • In addition to not being able to borrow books, DVDs, audio books, music etc., public computer and Internet access would be lost, as well as, staff, fax service, copier usage, museum passes, monthly art shows, meeting room space, the only WiFi hot spot …the list goes on.
  • Lawrence Library will lose accreditation for a minimum of 2 ½ years because a library must meet state accreditation requirements for 1 full year before applying for certification. The application process takes six months.

Please tell everyone you know and help us save our community.

Did you know?

  • 65% of Pepperell residents, ages 5-98, own a Lawrence Library card
  • Each day 1,100 items are borrowed (4,800/weekly, 19,000/monthly)
  • The library offers fax service and is one of the few free WiFi hot spots

Have you ever borrowed items from another library through our catalog? Checked out a museum pass or a movie just released on DVD? Cancelled a magazine subscription because the library carries it? Enjoyed free programming for kids, teens, and adults? Attended an Art Gallery exhibit?

What is your library worth to you? Check out the Value of Library Service Calculator at Some typical trips to the library:

2 adult books, 6 children’s books, 2 DVDs = $114
3 Interlibrary Loans = $75
4 DVDs, 4 CDs, 1 hour computer usage = $67.80
1 museum pass = $30
1 adult program, 1 children’s program = $22
1 hour computer usage, 1 online article, 1 research request = $21

If the library cannot provide you with these services and materials, what would you do?

Please help us by telling everyone you know.

Thank you,

On behalf of the Library Board of Trustees & executive board of the Friends of Lawrence Library
